One of your most important roles as a parent is keeping your child safe. As pediatricians, we at WK Center For Pediatrics - South want to support you as you do that.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends COVID-19 vaccination for all adolescents 12 years of age and older who do not have contraindications for taking it because of the scientific data that the vaccines are safe and effective in children. We join health experts across the nation and in the state as we urge you to use this important resource to protect your children from COVID-19.
While we learned early-on that COVID-19 could be milder in children than in adults, the new variants are changing that dynamic. In reality, children can become very ill with COVID-19, sick enough to require hospitalization. COVID-19 is highly contagious, so for children who are not yet old enough for the vaccine, we urge you to reinforce with them the importance of mask-wearing, hand-washing/sanitization, and physical distancing . All children in school, vaccinated or unvaccinated, should follow school guidelines and wear a mask, hand-wash frequently and socially distance.
One of the best things you can do to help protect your children is to be vaccinated yourself. All of the COVID-19 vaccines available in the United States provide a high level of protection from developing severe symptoms after receiving the recommended number of doses. They are very effective in prevention of hospitalization and death from COVID-19.
We know this is a tough time for parents and want you to know that we are here to support you and answer any questions you may have regarding COVID-19 or the vaccine. We keep up with the latest research and statistics through the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as from local sources and researchers and we are here to advise you.
Thank you for allowing us to care for your children. We join you in the hope of a better tomorrow for you, your children and our community.
